Update: Listen to our first AI podcast, where we explore the offerings of Synch. Please note, this podcast is for informational and entertainment purposes only.
As Synch celebrates its 10th anniversary on March 1st, it's a perfect opportunity to reflect on the journey so far and look ahead to the future. In an exclusive interview with one of the founders, Jim Runsten shares insights into the inception and evolution of Synch.
Synch sprang to life with the belief that the world didn't need another law firm. It aimed to make waves, break free from expectations, and build a new kind of firm from the ground up. "Not just another firm," was the mantra. Jim recalls the lovely naivety and audacity of starting in a three-month sprint from January to March in 2014. The manifesto drafted early on laid the foundation for the unique culture that still defines Synch today.
Many milestone moments have truly symbolized our journey, such as placing our sign on the facade of our offices on Birger Jarlsgatan in the very center of Stockholm, signifying the start of our company.
As for tech innovation, establishing SynchLab already in 2014 became a marker for our culture of innovation. It has provided a launchpad for testing and implementing initiatives like new ways of working, document automation, SynchSandbox and AI development (later spun off as Maigon. While some innovations have been successful, others, although not as prosperous, have still offered valuable learning experiences.
Synch actively engages in societal issues, and among other things was the first law firm in Sweden to enter into a partnership for fast tracking integration of those having migrated to Sweden with academic degrees struggling to enter the job market. SynchHeart represents the ethos that everyone has value and deserves opportunities.
As well as successes, we have also had our challenges. For example in our tech hub ventures and establishing ourselves as the first Nordic law firm in Silicon Valley. There, our ambitions sometimes exceeded our resources. In addition, our decision to discontinue operations in Denmark and Norway is viewed as a valuable learning experience rather than a failure and we’ve always have had a lot of fun along the way.
Innovation at Synch is a core principle that permeates every aspect of our organization. The emphasis is on meaningful contributions rather than working hours, and we encourage and value innovative thinking. This open culture allows people to express unconventional ideas, fostering an environment where new concepts can be voiced and explored.
Positively, although slower than what we had hoped for. There is a greater awareness of the need to stay relevant with the wave of AI. Innovation has always been at the center of Synch’s visionary approach and our curiosity about new technology and regulations that come with it such as blockchain, fintech and web3. The industry has changed a lot during these 10 years, there is greater awareness of the need to stay relevant simply because everything is going so much faster these days.
Yes, from the very beginning our vision was centred on adapting to our clients’ needs rather than offering a one-size-fits-all-model and thereby challenging industry norms. By striking a balance between competitiveness, high delivery standards, and exceptional quality, Synch is determined to create its unique space.
While the organization has evolved with more structured functions and fantastic employees, the essence of Synch remains the same. We continue to be a collaborative workplace and partner for our customers, focusing on the 'why' instead of the 'what' in every situation, and adapting to legal challenges ensuring our customers feel supported with a "We’ve got your back."
I am so proud of the fact that with all the technological advances, innovation, and growth we’ve always managed to remain a people-centric workplace where our colleagues can feel grounded and safe.
For us, it’s the drive to showcase that one can create something and succeed regardless of background. Synch’s appearance and culture reflect diversity, where knowledge and ambition take precedence over appearance.
As Synch looks to the future, the company remains enigmatic about revealing specific plans. The emphasis is firmly on daring to stand out, challenging others to think differently, and being a few years ahead of the curve, shaping the direction of the industry.
As Synch enters the next decade, it is dedicated to strengthening its foundation of innovation and inspiring the legal landscape.
We would like to take the opportunity to extend our heartfelt gratitude to all our current team members, past colleagues, valued clients, trusted partners, dedicated suppliers, and all other supporters for their incredible contributions and unwavering support over the years. Your commitment has been instrumental in our journey, and we are deeply appreciative of the collaborative spirit that has propelled us forward. Thank you all for your continued belief in our vision and for being an integral part of our success story.
